Currently I’m thinking about a series of 22 paintings on The Judgement of Paris by Lucas Cranach the Elder. A big change in Cranach’s career comes with Lutheranism. He started as a late Medieval painter doing mostly standard Catholic religious commissions. He was court painter to Duke Frederick the Third of Saxony, known as Frederick the Wise, whose capitol was Wittenberg. That was where Martin Luther lived his adult life during the Lutheran Revolution. With the founding of the University of Wittenberg–Hamlet’s alma mater–and the rise of Lutheranism, Cranach began to get commissions to paint portraits of wealthy patrons and mythological subjects.
